Green Tea May Help Block Cancer
Research published in the journal Chemical Research
suggests that Green Tea may be even better at blocking certain types of
cancer than first suspected.
Scientists have known for many years that Green Tea is rich in powerful
anti-oxidants, which may help give some protection against cancers. However,
they have now discovered that 2 chemicals present in Green Tea can help
inhibit the activity of a specific molecule known to play an important
part in the way cancers grow.
Known as the Aryl Hydrocarbon or AH receptor, this molecule has the power
to activate genes either positively or negatively depending on certain
factors. Toxins, dioxins, cigarette smoke and pollution can all cause
the AH receptor to react in a negative way and instigate potentially harmful
activity.
The chemicals in Green Tea, which have been found to inhibit AH activity,
are remarkably similar to flavanoids found in broccoli, cabbage, red wine
and grapes. It is thought that they act on a number of different pathways
to shut down AH activity.
Although scientists stress this research is only in its infancy, the
results are very encouraging.
If you would like the anti-oxidants effects of Green Tea to play a part
